A snowboarder rescued from deep snow in Washington state has shared his terrifying experience after a stranger saved his life. Trapped upside down beneath the snow near Mount Baker, Ian Steger believed he might never escape. What happened next was an extraordinary act of courage.

In this remarkable report from KOMO News, Steger recounts the frightening moments before skier Francis Zuber discovered him buried in a dangerous tree well. The rescue, captured on Zuber’s helmet camera, shows how one person’s quick reaction can make the difference between life and death.

Snowboarder Rescued After Falling Into a Dangerous Tree Well

The incident occurred in March 2023 near Mount Baker, Washington, when Steger was snowboarding through a wooded area with friends. After taking a different route between the trees, he fell into a tree well and became trapped beneath deep snow.

A tree well is an area of loose snow surrounding a tree trunk. Falling into one can be extremely dangerous, especially when someone becomes trapped headfirst and cannot free themselves.

As Steger struggled, his movements pushed him deeper into the snow. Unable to escape or communicate with his friends, he began fearing for his life.

Fortunately, skier Francis Zuber happened to pass nearby. He noticed part of a snowboard sticking out of the snow and immediately realized something was wrong.

Zuber rushed toward the trapped snowboarder and began digging with his hands. After reaching Steger’s face and clearing space for him to breathe, he continued the rescue using a shovel.

Thanks to this incredible intervention, Steger survived an ordeal that could easily have ended in tragedy.
