Gavin Free and Dan Gruchy use their high-speed camera equipment to reveal something our eyes could never properly observe in real time: the exact way a CD behaves immediately before it shatters.
As the rotational speed increases, the disc begins showing visible deformation. Watching the footage slowed dramatically reveals unusual waves and distortions moving through the CD before the material finally reaches its limit.
Then comes the spectacular part. The disc breaks apart so quickly at normal speed that it appears almost instantaneous, but the ultra-slow-motion footage transforms the destruction into a sequence where individual cracks and fragments can actually be seen developing.
It’s a brilliant example of what high-speed photography does best: taking an event that lasts only a fraction of a second and revealing an entire hidden world of movement inside it.
