Watch 20 Years of a Man’s Life Pass Before Your Eyes

  • by

What does 20 years of a human life look like when compressed into just a few minutes?

Photographer Noah Kalina gives us an extraordinary answer. Starting in 2000, he photographed himself day after day, keeping his face positioned in roughly the same way while everything else slowly changed around him. Put thousands of those photographs together, and the passage of time suddenly becomes something you can actually see.

7,263 Photos — One Incredible Transformation

The video brings together 7,263 photographs taken across 20 years, from January 11, 2000 through January 11, 2020. Kalina was only 19 when the project began.

What makes it so fascinating isn’t one dramatic transformation. It’s all the tiny changes.

Hair grows and disappears. His face gradually matures. Facial hair comes and goes. The backgrounds change. Even the photographic quality evolves. Yet the consistent framing of his face makes the years flow almost seamlessly into one another.

It’s incredibly simple — and remarkably difficult to stop watching.

Why We Loved This Video

This is exactly the kind of video we love at TOP Cool Vids: a simple idea that becomes extraordinary because of the dedication behind it.

There are no elaborate effects needed. The fascination comes from watching something we’re normally unable to perceive: time changing a person little by little.

Kalina’s project had already become an internet phenomenon years earlier. He published a six-year version in 2006, which went viral, before continuing the project and eventually releasing this 20-year edition.

Twenty years of ordinary days become one remarkable visual record of a life.
