Watching elephants smash giant pumpkins is one of those wonderfully entertaining sights that never gets old. In this delightful video from Oregon Zoo, a family of elephants takes on enormous pumpkins, crushing them with remarkable ease before enjoying a delicious seasonal treat.
The pumpkins are absolutely massive, but they’re no match for the strength of these incredible animals. What follows is a spectacular combination of flying pumpkin pieces, playful elephant behavior and some very enthusiastic snacking.
Elephants Smash Giant Pumpkins During a Zoo Tradition
Every autumn, Oregon Zoo in Portland celebrates an unusual tradition called Squishing of the Squash. Instead of carving pumpkins into Halloween decorations, the zoo gives its Asian elephant family some enormous pumpkins to investigate, crush and eat.
In this particular video, the elephants receive more than 1,200 pounds of pumpkins. Their powerful feet and enormous body weight make surprisingly quick work of the giant vegetables.
It’s fascinating to see how easily the elephants break open something that would be extremely difficult for a human to crush. Once the pumpkins split apart, the animals can enjoy the pieces as a tasty reward.
But there’s more to this event than entertainment. Providing elephants with unusual objects and different ways to interact with food is part of animal enrichment, helping encourage natural exploration and stimulating behaviors.
That’s what makes watching elephants smash giant pumpkins so enjoyable: it’s both an impressive display of animal strength and a fun activity for the elephants themselves.
Why We Loved This Video
The contrast between the enormous pumpkins and the seemingly effortless way the elephants crush them is absolutely amazing.
We especially enjoyed watching the animals investigate their oversized treats before turning them into a pumpkin feast. Their movements and reactions make the entire experience wonderfully entertaining.
It’s a cheerful, family-friendly wildlife video that combines animal behavior, impressive natural strength and a wonderfully unusual autumn tradition.
