Filmed in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, this remarkable wildlife encounter shows a persistent leopard repeatedly trying to find a way past its opponent’s formidable quills. The standoff reportedly continued for around 90 minutes — and neither animal seemed eager to surrender.

The leopard clearly has speed, claws and predatory instinct on its side. The porcupine, however, doesn’t need to outrun its attacker. Its best strategy is simply to keep those intimidating quills pointed in the right direction.
Each time the leopard searches for an opening, the porcupine adjusts its position and presents a barrier of sharp quills. The big cat circles, approaches and tries again, but getting close enough to attack means risking a painful encounter.
One common myth is that porcupines can shoot their quills at predators. They can’t. Instead, the quills form an extremely effective physical defense when an attacker makes contact.
