Swimming pools are usually filled with water. Mark Rober decided that was far too ordinary and spent months figuring out whether he could fill an entire swimming pool with Jello instead.
It sounds like a ridiculous idea, but turning that idea into reality becomes a genuinely fascinating engineering challenge. Making a bowl of Jello is easy. Making thousands of gallons behave the same way is another problem entirely.
Turning a Childhood Idea Into a Giant Engineering Experiment
Mark had wanted to try swimming in Jello long before he started making videos. Actually building a Jello pool, however, meant solving some unusual problems — including how to heat enormous quantities of liquid and then cool everything enough for the gelatin to set.
Instead of simply scaling up a kitchen recipe and hoping for the best, he experiments on a smaller scale first. That process becomes one of the most interesting parts of the video because you get to see a seemingly silly idea approached like a real engineering problem.
The full-sized project uses multiple large drums to prepare the mixture, while the outdoor temperature becomes part of the cooling strategy. Eventually, the pool transforms into something that looks unlike any backyard swimming pool you’ve probably seen before.
And then comes the question the entire experiment was designed to answer: what is it actually like to jump into — and try to move through — a giant pool of Jello?

We love that the enormous Jello pool is spectacular enough to be entertaining on its own, but the journey to create it is just as interesting. You get the fun payoff while also seeing the testing and problem-solving required to make an absurdly ambitious idea actually work.
